Helping you into work
January 6, 2011
The arrival of a once in a lifetime event brings with it life changing opportunities. As the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games get under starter’s orders, residents looking for work are being supported into jobs with a little help from Workplace.
Sandra Osei is one of the thousands of people that found work last year using the council’s job brokerage scheme. The 25-year-old from Custom House couldn’t quite believe it when the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), responsible for preparing and staging the 2012 Games, offered her a job as a security team administrator.
Sandra found out about the vacancy after signing up to Workplace following a recommendation from a relative about their services. Sandra said: “I didn’t realise the range and number of roles available at LOCOG, or that they were accessible to people like me.
“Signing up with Workplace was simple. My advisor was really helpful and reassured me that something would come up.” Within two months Sandra was interviewed for her current role and a month later became a fully fledged member of the LOCOG team.
Sandra puts her success down to the support that she received from Workplace. She said: “Even before I’d applied for any roles, Workplace identified my interests and previous experience and assessed and interviewed me.”
LOCOG are recruiting thousands of people for a range of roles. Knowing this, Sandra was confident that she could secure a job. She enjoys her work for many reasons, from meeting her friendly colleagues to overcoming exciting challenges. She said: “What I like most is that I am part of something special – you can’t get a bigger project than the Olympics. I can look back and think I helped make that happen.”
