With this
job, I feel I've
landed on
my feet.
Ella Dunstone,
Trainee Plumber
Higgins Construction
I worked from 16 to 21 until I had my son Joshua who is
now five. Being a single parent was a big barrier to getting
work - trying to get the right hours and childcare - it just wasn't
happening. But I was looking ahead to when Joshua would
be at school and it would be easier to work. I knew I wanted
to be a plumber so I enrolled on a local two-year heating
and ventilation course. I was looking for work experience
and heard about Workplace's links with the Olympic site so
called in.
My coach at Workplace was brilliant. After three rejections from
employers I was totally disheartened but he kept my spirits up.
Through Workplace I was able to access London and Quadrants
training and employment programme and they placed me in
this role with Higgins Construction. Workplace was able to help
me get funding for work clothes and childcare.
I now have fantastic employers who are supportive of
my situation and I'm close to home and Joshua's school,
which is ideal.
