The Olympic and Paralympic Games are about more than just sport. Together, they bring life-changing opportunities which can inspire residents before, during and after the Games. One such programme that is inspiring people is the BBC 2012 – Work Experience scheme, currently recruiting via Workplace. The scheme is only open to residents of the six host Olympic boroughs, and is aimed at adults aged over 18 who are not graduates.
The entry level programme gives successful participants the opportunity to gain four weeks’ work experience in areas ranging from the BBC newsroom to BBC Children’s. Mohammed Delwar Al Monsur, 24, from Forest Gate, has recently completed a placement at The One Show. Having studied media at school, he saw the scheme as: “a good opportunity to get some experience”.
Although the placements are unpaid, the application process is rigorous. Mohammed explained that he underwent four stages of recruitment, saying: “I think they wanted to see who was eager, confident and enthusiastic. Of course you want it to be over quickly, but it was a great learning process.
“I found out about the role via Workplace. They supported me by showing me how to approach an interview, how to be confident and how to act in a work environment.”
Mohammed was appointed as a runner, an entry level role which requires a range of skills. Mohammed said: “I started by shadowing and learnt a lot from the people around me. I then went on to help with props, set design, assist with research, camera work and sound. I helped out on location and shared ideas I had for filming.
“I learned a lot and I really want to go back there! They have an apprentice scheme which I’d like to apply for.”
