Catering for You
April 29, 2011
The opening of Westfield Stratford City on 13 September is not just good news for shoppers – it also brings hundreds of new jobs to the borough. Workplace, the council’s jobs scheme, has been working closely with Westfield to match as many residents with those jobs as possible.
As well as a Great Eastern Market located at the heart of Westfield Stratford City, there will be an exciting range of restaurants opening such as Pizza Express, Nando’s, Wagamama and TGI Friday. With more than 50 food outlets expected, Newham will see lots more catering job opportunities. In this issue, we look at how Workplace can help you prepare for this new range of jobs.
Catering case studyMeet Samantha Grant, a hard-working mum of one from Manor Park. Samantha found out about Workplace through Advisor Outreach in Manor Park Library.
She was out of work and wanted to get back into catering. Workplace set Samantha up with her own advisor, who gave her one to- one assistance with achieving realistic job goals. She soon found work at Royal Mail, catering for postal workers. She says:
“Workplace paid for my travel and chef’s whites, which was really helpful. My advisor also found me childcare.”
Workplace is now sending Samantha on Health and Safety and Food and Hygiene courses, essential in this line of work. These qualifications will help her with future employment too.
She says: “My Workplace advisor has done a lot for me – she’s helped me with my CV, training, childcare. Most of all she’s looked after me.
“The best thing about being in work is having something to get up for; the days go quickly and the weekends mean more. I don’t like signing on – I like being able to spend money knowing I’ve worked hard for it.”
