National Apprenticeships Week - February 14, 2012
The fifth National Apprenticeship Week took place from 6 to 10 February 2012. Newham supported this week by promoting apprenticeships to employers, as well as residents.

"We’re with Apprenticeships because getting local people into jobs and helping them build careers is our top priority. Apprentices get on the job experience and a real chance to develop their skills. Plus, apprenticeships enable employers to design training which meets the needs of their business and snap up new talent crossing their path."

Sir Robin Wales
Mayor of Newham

Attention to Retail - November 25, 2011
Westfield Stratford City is more than a paradise of purchasing; it’s also a hive of employment activity. Already more than 10,000 jobs have been created at Europe’s biggest shopping centre, with even more to come from 2014. To ensure that Newham residents can get access to these jobs and progress in their careers once in the roles, Skills Place, together with Westfield and training provider Seetec, provides tailored training from the shopping centre itself.

Roll Call - November 23, 2011
There are many reasons why finding work can be a challenge. A skills gap, lack of experience or confidence and other barriers can make getting a job a job in itself. If you need a helping hand or support and guidance Workplace can get you on the road to employment.

High Flyer - November 23, 2011
Flying a jet is probably easier than trying to take pictures of Anthony Angol. It seems like everyone at London City Airport (LCA) knows its 27-year-old community relations executive – and they all want to stop and say hello. The charismatic former Cumberland School student is flying high thanks to an employment scheme that supports Newham residents who want their career to take off.

Taking a shine to Westfield - September 30, 2011
After a long wait, Westfield’s doors are finally open. The huge shopping centre is as shiny as a new pin, but its polished floors and smudge-free windows are something most shoppers will take for granted.

View from Sir Robin - Workplace, Westfield and Jobs - September 11, 2011
In the last couple of weeks we have seen the opening of the new Docklands Light Railway (DLR) extension from Stratford International to Woolwich and Beckton. Stratford is already the second most connected station in all of London and now you can go directly from Stratford to London City Airport, and hop on one of their daily flights to more than 30 destinations, including Zurich and New York. The new line also makes it easier to access Beckton, the University of East London Docklands campus and ExCeL.

Catering for you - April 29, 2011
The opening of Westfield Stratford City on 13 September is not just good news for shoppers – it also brings hundreds of new jobs to the borough. Workplace, the council’s jobs scheme, has been working closely with Westfield to match as many residents with those jobs as possible.

An experience that works - April 15, 2011
The Olympic and Paralympic Games are about more than just sport. Together, they bring life-changing opportunities which can inspire residents before, during and after the Games. One such programme that is inspiring people is the BBC 2012 – Work Experience scheme, currently recruiting via Workplace. The scheme is only open to residents of the six host Olympic boroughs, and is aimed at adults aged over 18 who are not graduates.

Employment promise is just the job - March 18, 2011
Every year I make a number of promises to residents and we’ll be reporting on the commitments I made last year in future editions of the Newham Mag. This year the most important promise I’ve made is to protect residents from the savage cuts being imposed on Newham by the government. One of the best ways to do that is to work hard to get as many people as possible into jobs.

Making Westfield Work for you - March 18, 2011
When Westfield Stratford City opens in September, it will be the biggest urban shopping centre in Europe with around 8,500 retail jobs up for grabs. Newham Council with Westfield is working hard now to make sure residents get the most from these job opportunities – just like the people local to Westfield White City did when that retail complex opened its doors.
